NUT | LAC 1

Finished 2021
for large orchestra
duration: 20'

NUT | LAC was my first purely instrumental work after a long phase of electronic projects. Over the past years, my main focus has been on the Amproprifications (preparatory work since 2015), a series in which existing works by other composers are superimposed exclusively with automated volume modulation — including Berio, Donatoni, Fauré, Maierhof, Kysela, Ablinger, Beethoven, Lang, Palestrina, and, though strictly speaking not part of the series, Lady Gaga.
For the first time, experiences from the Amproprifications had been transferred into a more instrumental, live-controllable context in "A C H K" for two electric guitars and electronics (first version premiered in 2018 at Berghain, Berlin). In a sense, NUT | LAC continues directly from there.
The core idea is unmistakable: the entire piece is built from a slow pulse whose speed and width are constantly modulated, shaping a musical flow that itself changes only extremely gradually. The finely varied rhythms of the Amproprifications here condense into a coarse, collective pulsing; the foreign material gives way to a slowly fraying sound field. Orchestral sound becomes drone metal, a swarm of particles, an MP3 encoder.
